学校创建于1994年的常德电脑技术学校;1998年更名为常德电脑专修*;2004年升格为湖南同德职业;2014年升格为普通本科院校,更名为湖南应用技术。

据2020年12月学校官网显示,学校已建设占地面积1200亩,建筑面积30多万平方米;拥有专职教师570人,在校本、专科学生12651余人;开设6个二级院系,开办21个本科专业、13个专科专业。
