An invitation must be promptly acknowledged.Whether a reply is accepted or not, either an acceptance or refusal must be confirmed. A reply to an invitation must be a definite acceptance or refusal to make the host know the number of guests. An open ended or ambiguous acceptance is not satisfactory.
An acceptance requires the repetition of both the date and the hour to prevent the possibility of a misunderstanding. Invitations should be answered in kind: formal invitations should be answered formally, informal invitations informally and oral invitations orally.
Formal replies should be written in the third person. There should be no heading, no salutation, no complimentary close, no inside address, and no signature. The writer should not refer to himself as I or to the addressee as you. Avoid all abbreviations except Mr., Dr., Mrs., and Messrs. Numbers occurring in dates should preferably be spelled out.
